Newmarket minor footballers bow out of championship
Newmarket’s minor footballers bowed out of the championship at the semi final stage when they were disappointingly defeated by Kanturk at Kiskeam on Wednesday evening in difficult conditions by 1-9 to 0-2.
Kanturk took the lead with a second minute point but both sides found it difficult to adapt to the conditions in the early stages. Kanturk eventually took control of the contest and two further points increased their advantage in the opening quarter. Newmarket despite some good build up play failed to convert their chances and during the course of the half had seven wides. Kanturk added to their tally with a fourth point and as the half came to a conclusion they managed to add another two points and enjoyed a six point lead at the turnover.
Newmarket eventually got off the mark when wing back Alan Forde soloed forward and from a difficult angle he kicked over a fine score, two minutes after the restart. As conditions deteriorated, Kanturk took firm control when in the fifth minute they eventually found a way past Newmarket’s excellent goalkeeper David Quinlan, for the games only goal. Newmarket failed to recover from this blow and despite their best efforts Kanturk added another brace of points within four minutes. The game went sixteen minutes without a score but once more with little over five minutes remaining, Kanturk scored their final point of the hour. Newmarket substitute Luke McCarthy scored a consolation point for Newmarket but it was Kanturk who advanced convincingly to the final.
