Newmarket defeated in the semi final of the Singleton Cup
Newmarket were defeated by Kilgarvan in the semi final of the Singleton Cup by 2-9 to 0-13 at Knocknagree on Tuesday evening.
Seanie Francis O’Connor converted a second minute free but Kilgarvan got on terms three minutes later. The industrious Robert Stack kicked Newmarket in front with a point but again Kilgarvan got back on terms. The sides exchanged four more points with Barry O’Leary twice edging Newmarket ahead with two fine efforts. John Lane gave Newmarket a slender lead for a fifth time but Kilgarvan hit the front after getting their first goal of the night. An additional point gave Kilgarvan a clear one goal advantage but Newmarket replied late in the half with Seanie Francis O’Connor and John Lane on target. Just a single point separated the sides at the turnover, Kilgarvan in front by 1-5 to 0-7.
Newmarket swung the contest in their favour after the break thanks to points from Brian Daly and Seanie Francis O’Connor with two points. Kilgarvan regained the lead when they struck for goal from a close in free but Seanie Francis O’Connor had the sides on level terms 0-11 to 2-5 at the three quarter mark. A close contest throughout, the sides again traded four points with Maurice Feehan and Tony O’Keeffe on target for Newmarket, leaving the scores deadlocked for the eighth time during the hour. It was the Kerry side that claimed victory at the death with two late points and seal their place in the final.
