Newmarket defeated by Kilbrin in entertaining junior hurling league game
Newmarket were defeated by Kilbrin in an entertaining junior hurling league game played in splendid sunshine at Newmarket on Tuesday evening by 3-19 to 3-13.
The game got off to a lively start with the visitors pointing and Donnacha O’Dea hitting an equalizer within two minutes. Kilbrin edged in front again before John Lane and Maurice Feehan found the range for Newmarket. Two goals were then scored within a minute of each other, Denys O’Brien connecting with an overhead strike to regain the lead forNewmarket after ten minutes. Kevin O’Sullivan pointed next before a Kilbrin score left Newmarket in front at the end of the first quarter by 1-4 to 1-3. Kilbrin restored parity and took a slender lead with Robert Stack tieing the sides again approaching the end of the half. Kilbrin struck for a second goal but Barry O’Leary replied with an instant point for Newmarket. A Kilbrin point gave them a clear three point lead at the turnover, 2-6 to 1-6.
Newmarket’s response was instant upon the restart when Maurice Feehan found the net for an equalizing goal. Little separated the sides as they exchanged six points in the next ten minutes, Denys O’Brien finding the target for Newmarket on each occasion with a fine array of scores from dead balls and play. Kilbrin then gained supremacy on scoring four unanswered points but Newmarket were once more in contention when Denys O’Brien found the net from a free, leaving just a solitary point between the sides, 2-13 to 3-9 with twelve minutes left to play. Kilbrin added three further points before Kevin O’Sullivan brought the arrears to three points. Critically at this stage Kilbrin scored their third goal of the contest and also added a point. Newmarket responded through points from Denys O’Brien and Seanie Francis O’Connor but Kilbrin saw out the contest with two more points either side of a Seanie Francis O’Connor score.
