Defeat for Minor Footballers in opening league game
Newmarket’s minor footballers had their first league outing away to Croke Rovers at Castlemagner on Saturday evening, with a strong home side claiming the points by 4-10 to 1-5.
Newmarket found themselves hit by a blitz at the start, conceding two goals and a point within four minutes, this despite some outstanding goalkeeping from David Quinlan. Eddie Allen pointed for Newmarket after twelve minutes as the team settled into the game. It was Croke Rovers who continued to add to their total and a third goal duly arrived before the interval as they notched a total of 3-7.
Ian Flanagan added two points in the third quarter as Newmarket put in a much improved performance. They were rewarded for their endeavour when Eddie Allen was on hand to finish to the net with ten minutes remaining. Ian Flanagan added on two further points before the finish for a young Newmarket side.
