Newmarket GAA Club Annual Social

Newmarket GAA Club held their social at the Hi Land on Friday night last, February 1st 2008.

Club chairperson Mary Stack welcomed all before inviting Duhallow Board secretary Tom Dennehy to address the attendance. He reflected on Newmarkets achievements both on and off the field, congratulated all on their achievements and thanked those who represented Duhallow from Newmarket during the past year. Mary Stack also reflected on the achievements of the clubs teams during 2007, thanking all players and mentors for their efforts, before singling out the successful under 21 football and Nevin Cup winning football teams and mentors that brought honours to the club during 2007. Mary also reviewed the ongoing developments and future plans thanking all who continue to contribute to the clubs ongoing fundraising drive including sponsors, businesses and individuals for their much appreciated support. She also paid tribute to the clubs committee and juvenile club committee for their efforts and congratulated those who went on to represent Newmarket for Duhallow, Cork and in Scor.

Sean Browne representing the clubs main sponsors Newmarket Motors congratulated the club for their efforts and wished them the best for the year ahead, before he went on to present the successful players with their medals. Prior to the presentation of medals, Club President Con Collins presented chairperson Mary Stack with a bouquet of flowers of behalf of the club committee for her outstanding efforts and immense contribution during the year. Under 21 football captain Bart Daly introduced the panel of players who received their medals before the captain of the Nevin Cup winning team Gerard Casey then introduced that winning panel.

The final presentation to be made was Clubman of the Year and the very worthy recipient was John Feehan. John has given tremendous service to the club in a number of roles. He was a duel player of some note winning numerous hurling honours with the club during a terrific period of success in the seventies. John also won Examiner Cup medals in football and wore the black and red jersey with distinction in both codes for many years. John then turned his attention to coaching hurling at juvenile level and is spoken of highly by all who worked under his guidance, many of whom have progressed to junior level today. In recent times John progressed to coaching the junior hurlers in 2005 and 2006, again his influence evident with his fellow mentors in the progress made by the team in that time. Outside of this John has always made himself available to the club to fulfil numerous chores at any time of the day or week and has made an invaluable contribution to the club in this respect.

The evening then concluded with Toss the Feathers keeping the crowd entertained with their music into the early hours.
