Newmarket win again in the Nevin Cup
Newmarket gained their second victory in their Nevin Cup group and go into their final game topping the group with four points from two games, after they defeated Kanturk by 2-12 to 1-7 under a floodlit Kiskeam on Tuesday evening, in a game played in perfect conditions.
Kanturk took an early lead but influential full forward gained parity in the fourth minute. John Lane edged Newmarket in front before John Ryan added a brace of points. Kanturk added a second point but a free flowing Newmarket side received a big boost when John Lane placed Sean Doody with a fine pass and he finished to the net in emphatic style from a tight angle at the end of the first quarter. John Ryan again found the target as Newmarket made the most of their dominance. Kanturk upped their performance for the rest of the half and added three points in succession. The half concluded with Kanturk on the ascendecy but Newmarket turned over in front by 1-5 to 0-5.
John Ryan and Nicky Flanagan with two points, increased Newmarkets advantage before Kanturk struck back with a goal. Kanturk went on to add two further points to leave the minimum between the sides, 1-8 to 1-7 as the game entered the final quarter. Newmarket regained the initiative and their cause was helped by points through Kevin O’Connor, Kevin O’Sullivan and Shane Murphy. The issue was sealed when Robert Stack found the net for a decisive second goal. Newmarket will now play Boherbue in their final group game.
