Newmarket u21 hurlers advance in Championship

Newmarket’s under 21 hurlers advanced in the championship after recording an impressive 2-20 to 3-7 victory over Millstreet in ideal conditions at Castlemagner on Sunday.

Newmarket got off to a flying start with John Lane and Robert Stack pointing within three minutes before Millstreet got on the board. The sides then exchanged points with Nicky Flanagan finding the target from long range for Newmarket. John Lane added a brace of points before Millstreet gained parity thanks to an eleventh minute goal, 0-5 to 1-2. Newmarket maintained their fine scoring rate with John Lane, Michael Kenneally and Conor Cronin pointing by the end of the first quarter. The prolific John Lane added the next three points as Newmarket impressed throughout the field. Timothy Murphy who had a fine game at midfield, pointed in injury time to leave the score 0-12 to 1-2 in Newmarkets favour at half time.

Newmarket increased their advantage when T.J. Bodie slotted over an early point with Millstreet replying within a minute. Kevin O’Sullivan converted a long range free before John Lane again found the target. Millstreet pointed next but Newmarket hit their first goal at the end of the third quarter when Ian Flanagan finished neatly to the net from the edge of the square.Millstreet were next to score but Newmarket found the net again when Robert Stack goalled. Millstreet rallied instantly with their second goal and further reduced the deficit thanks to a point and a third goal, to leave the score reading 2-15 to 3-6 as the game entered the closing five minutes. Newmarket bounced back with John Lane and Kevin O’Sullivan twice, pointing. A resilient Millstreet side pointed next but Newmarket rounded off their win, when fittingly the dynamic John Lane added two more points, to take his personal tally to eleven points.
