Minor footballers let early second half lead slip
Newmarket’s minor footballers left an early second half lead of seven points slip, as they went under to Lyre by 2-8 to 1-9 at Newmarket on Monday evening last.
Lyre opened the scoring with a fourth minute point but Robert Stack surged up the field six minutes later to kick an equalizer. Lyre hit the front again but Newmarket then enjoyed a successful period of the game. Alan Forde scored a brace of points and John Lane repeated the feat. John Lane then converted a twenty eighth minute penalty after Michael O’Leary was upended in the square. John Lane pointed next before a Lyre point saw the half end 1-6 to 0-3 in Newmarket’s favour.
John Lane pointed within two minutes of the restart to put Newmarket in a seemingly strong position. However, Lyre hit back in style. They found the net from the games second penalty but Jonathan O’Connor had a point for Newmarket a few minutes later. Two points were then exchanged with John Lane on target for Newmarket, who led 1-9 to 1-4 as the game entered its final ten minutes. A second Lyre goal reignited their challenge and they went on to dominate the remainder of the game. They knocked over four points in as many minutes at the end of the contest from various angles and ranges to claim the league points at stake.
