Opening Day Loss for Juniors in Ducon Cup

Newmarket travelled to Rockchapel on Saturday, for their first outing in this years Ducon Cup, with the home side emerging victorious by 3-7 to 1-10.

John Cronin opened the scoring when he converted a third minute free for Newmarket, with Rockchapel replying three minutes later. The first goal of the game came in the eighth minute when Rockchapel pounced on a rebound from the Newmarket upright to crash home a goal. John Ryan had a point for Newmarket but Rockchapel hit back to score two points of their own. Rockchapel scored their second goal in the twenty fifth minute to take a commanding lead. Newmarket finished the half strongly and were rewarded by scores from John Cronin, Micheal Hourigan and Timothy Murphy to leave the score 2-3 to 0-5 at half time.

Newmarket resumed with a major boost when John Cronin found the net six minutes into the half. The same player tied the scores with a point a minute later. Rockchapel took a grip on the game again with their third goal in their next foray upfield. Rockchapel pointed next but points from Bart Daly and John Cronin kept Newmarket in touch. The home side remained in front and despite a couple of points from Shane Anthony Murphy and John Ryan they claimed the points by ending ahead 3-7 to 1-10.
