Under 21 Footballers March On
Newmarket’s under 21 footballers got the playing season off to a terrific start when they recorded a comprehensive 3-15 to 0-4 victory over defending champions Kiskeam, in a repeat of last years final at Rockchapel on Saturday.
Newmarket got off to a dream start when full forward Ricky Reidy goalled within a minute. Newmarket made full use of their fine start and found the range with a succession of points from Michael Kenneally, John Ryan and Nicky Flanagan, all within the first five minutes of play. John Ryan and John Lane added to the total before Kiskeam scored their first point. John Ryan added a brace of points with Kevin O’Sullivan and John Lane also adding to the scoreboard. The half ended as it began for Newmarket when corner back Brian O’Riordan converted a penalty in injury time to leave to score 2-9 to 0-1 in Newmarkets favour.
The game resumed with John Ryan slotting over two frees for Newmarket before Kiskeam pointed. Bart Daly exchanged points with a third Kiskeam score before another John Ryan free left the score 2-13 to 0-3, entering the final quarter. Five minutes from time John Lane pointed with Conor Cronin following suit within two minutes. Conor Cronin then capped a fine performance by scoring Newmarkets third goal before a Kiskeam point brought an end to proceedings with Newmarket victors by 3-15 to 0-4.
