Newmarket GAA Club Annual Social
Newmarket GAA Club held their annual social before a sizeable attendance at the River Island Hotel, Castleisland, on Saturday February 3rd 2007.
Pride of place went to the clubs minor football team that last year won the Duhallow championship for the third successive year and also the Duhallow league title for a second year in a row. Club chairperson Mary Stack paid a glowing tribute to the side and their mentors and praised all other teams within the club. She outlined the current activities within the club and plans for the future. Fr Cronin P.P. complemented the club and congratulated the minors on their array of successes in recent years. Duhallow Board Treasurer, Richard Murphy thanked the club for their cooperation and also gave glowing tributes to the fine minor team in both hurling and football. He thanked the players that made themselves available to Duhallow sides and especially Paul Murphy who gave great service as a selector to the Duhallow senior football side. Sean Browne of club sponsors addressed the attendance before presenting the minor team with their medals.
The Clubman of the Year award was presented to club treasurer Neilie McCarthy, a very popular and deserving winner. Neilie has given great service to the club for a number of years as a dual player, selector, committee member and club officer. Among his playing honours are a Duhallow Junior Hurling League medal, 2 Examiner Cup medals and a Duhallow Junior football championship medal in 1993. He captained Newmarket in the Duhallow Junior football final of 1989 and also represented Duhallow. He has served as a selector on numerous sides and successes include Intermediate football league, Nevin Cup, Junior B football league and championship.
Marty Williams provided the musical entertainment as all went on to enjoy a memorable night into the early hours.
