Minor Hurlers Open Campaign with Defeat
Newmarket’s minor hurlers began their league campaign with a home defeat against a fine Kanturk side by 3-17 to 1-13.
John Lane converted three frees as Kanturk turned on the style in the opening half hitting over a succession of fine scores as they notched up a tally of 2-12. John Ryan ended the half with Newmarkets fourth point after a fine individual effort.
Kanturk added three points before Newmarket began a spirited rally. Robert Stack struck for a close range goal and Nicky Flanagan hit a brace of points, despite Kanturk adding a third goal. John Lane was unerring from placed balls notching five second half points. Ian Flanagan and Kevin O’Sullivan were also on target as Newmarket kept hurling until the final whistle and enjoyed considerable success in the second half driven on by the inspirational efforts of John Scanlon.
