Intermediates Lose Out to Last Minute Goal
A last minute goal was decisive as Newcestown snatched victory from Newmarket in a premier intermediate football league game played at Newmarket last Wednesday, the result favouring the Carbery side by 2-6 to 0-10.
The visitors got off to an ideal start courtesy of a third minute goal. Newmarket responded well and hit four points in succession from Mark Reidy, Kevin O’Connor, Seanie Francis O’Connor and Maurice Feehan overturning the lead. Newcestown tied the scores as the half entered the closing stages, before the sides exchanged a brace of points with a Kevin O’Connor point tieing the sides at 0-5 to 1-2 at half time.
Kevin O’Connor edged Newmarket in front but Newcestown again gained parity. Newmarket began to take advantage with John Cronin (twice) and Seanie Francis O’Connor on target with impressive scores. As the game entered the final six minutes Newcestown upped their performance considerably and scored three points in as many minutes which tied the sides for the fifth time. With time virtually up Newcestown attacked again and struck for the all important goal. Shane Anthony Murphy pointed for Newmarket but time ran out as Newcestown claimed the points.
